Vieira: We've won nothing yet

13 April 2012

Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira is attempting to dampen down the euphoria surrounding the in-form Gunners, who have won seven games in a row.

Arsene Wenger's side are nine points clear at the top of the Barclaycard Premiership, in their fourth-consecutive FA Cup semi-final and due to meet Celta Vigo on Wednesday for a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Managers of vanquished teams - and their fans - are queuing up to call Arsenal the greatest team in the world, with Portsmouth's Harry Redknapp the latest after Saturday's 5-1 cup demolition at Fratton Park, but Vieira pointed out: "We have won nothing yet.

"We have to wait before we can call ourselves a great side.

"Yes, we are doing well in the Champions League and FA Cup and we are well ahead in the Premier League, but at this stage we have no trophy yet this season," he told the London Evening Standard.

"We are getting the benefit of five or six years of many of us being together but being a great team is all about winning things.

"We were in a position to win the Premier League last year but we did not win it. We have learned from that this year and that shows our intelligence."

Arsenal tossed away a lead at this stage last season when Manchester United put together a long unbeaten run to snatch the title.

"We know we will win as a squad or lose as a squad," Vieira added.

"We all want to play in the team and we are making it tough for the boss to pick the starting 11. Everybody is fighting hard in training to show him how much they want to play.

"We are together outside the pitch as well. Everybody gives a bit of himself and nobody is happy to be on the bench.

"We are doing well but we are still far away from winning a trophy. We have to be focused on every game."

Robert Pires and Dennis Bergkamp, who were rested for the Portsmouth tie, are both almost certain to be recalled for the return game with Celta Vigo, who come to Highbury 3-2 down from the first leg two weeks ago.

Pascal Cygan may also play in central defence as it has been Wenger's policy not to strain Sol Campbell over two matches in a few days because of a groin injury.

The game is followed by Saturday's trip to Blackburn who did the double over Arsenal last season, virtually handing the title to United.
