Juan Martin del Potro has entered next month's US Open, defying the sceptics who believed a wrist operation would stop him defending his title.

The Argentine has not played since the Australian Open in January and had surgery in May which ruled him out of the French Open and Wimbledon.

Ugo Colombini, the player's agent, said: "Del Potro is working and hopefully he will be back soon."

Last year Del Potro became the first man other than Rafael Nadal to beat Roger Federer in the final of a Grand Slam tournament, coming from behind to see off the Swiss star in five sets.

The final Grand Slam of this season starts on 30 August.
