West Ham injury news: Jarrod Bowen facing race to be fit for second leg of Sevilla clash

Jarrod Bowen is facing a race to be fit for the decisive second-leg of West Ham’s Europa League tie with Sevilla.

The winger did not travel to Andalusia with the rest of the squad for last night’s narrow 1-0 defeat and his pace and finishing ability were sorely missed.

West Ham, who face Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday before the second-leg at home next Thursday, are still working to ascertain the exact nature of Bowen’s injury.

The 25-year-old was forced off in the second half at Liverpool last weekend after a kick to his heel by Andy Robertston and while scans showed no severe damage, the forward has suffered swelling this week.

Bowen has undergone a number of additional scans and tests but the Hammers are struggling to diagnose exactly what the problem is.

Asked whether Bowen would be fit for the second-leg at the London Stadium next week, manager David Moyes said: “I have no idea at the moment.

“We are still trying to clear up exactly the injury, in all the scans and information we have it does not look too bad but his action coming off the pitch at Anfield made it look more serious than we thought. And that has not added up.

“Since then Jarrod is slightly improving but not as fast as we hoped, we did not think it was anything serious.

“So we are still trying to get to the bottom of it. Maybe today we get back and Jarrod is okay, it could just be one of those things.”

Bowen has scored seven goals in his last 11 games for the Hammers and has hopes of being named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad this month, so long as he has returned to fitness by then.

“He has been on fire this season,” said teammate Ben Johnson.

“He has scored in important games where we’ve needed three points or not played as well. He is a big miss for us, we have players who can fill in but we just want him back soon.”

Moyes was at least able to welcome Declan Rice back from illness at Sevilla last night and the England international put in a superb performance at the base of a midfield three with a number of significant challenges to break up the hosts’ advances.

Rice had only managed the one training session before playing 90 minutes having, according to Moyes, felt incredibly unwell.

“He does a great job for us,” said Moyes. “Everybody is aware of how big a player he is and we hope he can go again. He was really unwell over the weekend so it says a lot about him as he was very good last night.”
