West Ham player ratings vs Sevilla: Declan Rice impresses on return but Pablo Fornals too wasteful

West Ham must come from behind to reach the Europa League quarter-finals after a 1-0 defeat at Sevilla in the first-leg of their last-16 tie.

After an engaging first half in which both sides, through Munir and then Nikola Vlasic, passed up glorious chances, Sevilla took the lead early in the first half.

Marcos Acuna clipped a free-kick to the far side of the box where Munir was waiting to finish into the far corner.

David Moyes sent on Said Benrahma to inject some life into the forward line and the Algerian slid the ball across for Manuel Lanzini, who was denied by a superb Jesus Navas block.

Here is how Jack Rosser rated the Hammers...

Alphonse Areola 6

Nothing the Frenchman could have done about the goal and made some important stops which could be important after the second leg.

Ben Johnson 7

Impressive defensively and delivered some dangerous crosses in the first half.

Craig Dawson 6

Lost track of Munir too often in the first half but a decent enough performance.

Kurt Zouma 6

Impressive showing for the most part and confident on the ball under pressure. Sold short by Fornals for the foul which led to the goal.

Aaron Cresswell 6

Solid defensive display but struggled to get forward as often as usual.

Declan Rice 7

Playing in a deeper role than usual at the base of a midfield three, made some superb challenges.

AP

Tomas Soucek 7

Starting in a more advanced role than usual and was combative in midfield and tested Bono with a good effort.

Manuel Lanzini 7

West Ham’s most creative player and narrowly denied an equaliser by Jesus Navas.

Nikola Vlasic 5

Worked hard off the ball but wasted West Ham’s best chance with a timid header at Bono from five yards.

Pablo Fornals 5

Tireless off the ball but far too wasteful on it and left Zouma in trouble with a poor ball at the back which led to the goal.

Michail Antonio 6

After an encouraging show at Anfield Antonio dipped here once more. Worked hard in the forward line but had next to no service.

Substitutes

Said Benrahma 6

Faded after an encouraging start off the bench.
