Thiago Silva gives clear response to critics of £600m transfer spree: ‘The only winner here is Chelsea’

Chelsea’s massive transfer spending spree will only improve the quality of the team, Thiago Silva has stated.

There are fears that a large squad filled with new, often young, players could struggle to deliver the success required of the Blues’ £600million wealth of signings.

But veteran defender Silva has insisted that Chelsea’s fortunes will only improve with such high competition for places.

The 38-year-old told Parimatch: “The fact that you play for Chelsea means there are great players, and I think the technical level increases more and more because there’s greater competition and enthusiasm and the fight for each position increases.

“I think the only winner here is Chelsea by showing it’s a club with great players. On the pitch, we, or whoever starts, will do the club justice.”

Chelsea face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday having been forced to leave a handful of first-team stars out of their squad list.

On a run of three successive draws, Graham Potter’s fresh-faced side are yet to fully gel in a process which Silva has admitted will take time.

He added: “I think the new signings were well-executed and well thought-out. Of course, when new players arrive, the chemistry isn’t always the best at the beginning – it takes time.”
