Petr Cech has backed Arsene Wenger's decision to rest him in favour of David Ospina in the Champions League.

The former Chelsea goalkeeper has impressed since making the £10m switch across the capital, but has been surprisingly left out of Champions League defeats to Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiakos by Arsenal Wenger.

The Czech international has no complaints though and told Premier League World: "In the modern game it's almost impossible for you to play so many competitions and there are days where you need to get rest and mentally refreshed.

"At Arsenal you hope to play 60 games in a season, which means you continue in every competition until the end, until the finals, to challenge for the trophies and medals.

He added: "This is where you need to make sure everyone is refreshed and ready for the longevity of the season."

Ospina was widely criticised following the Olympiakos defeat after his mishandling led to the Greek side going 2-1 up.
