Everton working with Merseyside Police to investigate reported racist abuse against Arsenal player

Everton have confirmed police are investigating a reported incident of racist abuse towards an Arsenal player.

The Gunners travelled to Goodison Park last weekend, and Leandro Trossard’s second-half strike gave them a 1-0 victory as Everton’s winless start to the Premier League season continued.

It has now emerged that an Arsenal player was reportedly a victim of racist of abuse during the early stages of the match, with the Toffees stating they will seek the “strongest possible sanctions” as they work with the police.

A statement from the club read: “Everton Football Club is working alongside Merseyside Police to investigate a reported incident of racist abuse directed towards an opposition player during Sunday’s Premier League match with Arsenal at Goodison Park.

“Everton condemns all forms of discrimination and we will seek the strongest possible sanctions to tackle anti-social and or criminal behaviour, including club bans and criminal prosecution.

“The incident took place approximately 15 minutes into the first half of Sunday’s game, in the Lower Gwladys Street stand near to the Bullens Road stand.”
