No interest: Arsenal will not launch a bid for Jermain Defoe

Arsenal will not launch a sensational eleventh hour bid to land former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe.

Arsene Wenger revealed the Gunners were 'very active' going into transfer deadline day following yesterday's 1-1 draw with Leicester City.

Yaya Sanogo - who had only made one career Premier League start before Sunday's draw - led the Arsenal line at the King Power Stadium.

But the performance highlighted an apparent need to reinforce the frontline as they created 24 chances against the top flight newcomers without testing Kasper Schmeichel a great deal.

And there were reports suggesting Defoe had been offered to Arsenal on loan to help ease the absence of Olivier Giroud, who is sidelined until the new year with a broken leg.

However, Defoe is currently sidelined with a groin problem himself and Standard Sport understands that Arsenal have no interest in the former Tottenham man.

The news comes as Wenger travels to Rome to referee a charity match in the Italian capital, with chief executive Ivan Gazidis and negotiator Dick Law heading up any late business.
