BBC newsreader Simon McCoy was hilariously taken aback by the Spice Girls reunion announcement and expressed concern over Victoria Beckham’s absence from the line-up.

The 57-year-old presenter, who has decades of broadcast experience, said the news left him in “shock”.

It came as Mr McCoy was discussing the tour on Monday after playing the group’s announcement video on BBC News.

As the clip ended, he paused and said: “I'm in shock.

“What struck me there is actually without Victoria, will the music suffer?”

Ms Izundu began to laugh at his comment, announced in a particularly straight and serious tone, and repeated the “will the music suffer?” line back to him.

She said she did not think the music would suffer, but it “won’t feel like the original line up”.

Mr McCoy said “well that’s good” when he was told the music would not be too badly affected.

Continuing to quiz the reporter on the announcement, he exhaled deeply before a stifled laugh then said: “I should have prepared for this.”

Then asked: “Principally this is a big deal isn’t it?”

Ms Izundu said yes and spoke of their performance at the Olympic games in London.

After this she also explained how the band encouraged “girl power”.

Continuing his straight tone, he asked: “Just allow me to slightly cynical for a moment – are they short of cash? What’s behind this?”

He was told how the members had all had successful other projects following and “they all have made money in their own right”.

Mr McCoy also said he had previously seen the group before, then said the “excitement is tangible”, before telling the camera to point to a laughing Ms Izundu.

As well as this comical exchange, on Twitter he replied to a post from the BBC about the tour which said “say you’ll be there” with a simple “no”.
