George Gilbey's mother Linda McGarry has shared the last words he said to her before his death.

The Gogglebox star tragically passed away on March 27 at the age of 40 due to a “freak accident” at work.

Gilbey had been working on a roof when he fell 80ft to his death through a plastic skylight, an inquest heard.

He sustained traumatic injuries to his head and torso and died at the scene in Shoeburyness, Essex, the hearing in Chelmsford was told.

Coroner’s officer Deborah Frost said that paramedics and police attended but that he died at the scene, with his provisional cause of death recorded as “traumatic injury to head and torso consistent with fall from height”.

Following the inquest’s findings, Gilbey’s mother Linda, who starred alongside her son in Gogglebox, has said his last words to her before he died were, “I love you.”

She told The Sun: “It was an honour for him to have been my son. We had a blast for 40 years.

“He phoned me at 9.30 on the morning and said he was working – and asked me for his ‘breakfast money’.”

Linda remembered how she put £30 in his account so he could get food, and he “seemed fine” before his sudden passing.

She shared: “He had a drink the night before, and liked a bottle of white wine or two, but was happy that he was working. He ended the phone call by saying, ‘I love you’ like he usually did. I treasure those words.”

McGarry, whose husband and Gibley’s stepdad Pete McGarry died in 2021 aged 71, told to the outlet how “nothing will bring him back” so she just has to “go with it”.

She also explained that her son was striving to make some income to afford a room in London and be close to his eight-year-old daughter, Amelie.

A man, aged in his 40s and from the Witham area of Essex, was previously arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter in connection with the incident.

He was later released by police under investigation.
