The former Spice Girl, 42, launched herself at the music mogul during a live broadcast of America’s Got Talent after he joked that one act had reminded him of “Mel’s wedding night.”

He said: “A lot of anticipation…not much promise or delivery.”

Mel grabbed a glass of water and soaked him with the contents. The force of her lunge split her dress and she stormed off of the set.

She later returned to stage to watch the next act.

Speaking to Extra’s Terri Seymour about the incident, Cowell said: “I was trying to make light of something… I thought she’d have a sense of humour. She lost it.”

He continued: “I was the one who got soaked, so I should be mad at her. She’s fine. I’m fine. Just one of those things, Terri. We got over it.”

Explaining her version of events, Mel said: “The act before made me cry, because it’s all about dads and cancer and I just lost my dad.

“He goes and says something stupid like that, so then I got angry. How do you know what my wedding night was like all those years ago?”

Mel B is currently in the process of divorcing husband of 10 years Stephen Belafonte, amid allegations that he was violent and abusive towards her.
