Power Rangers film features first openly gay superhero on the big screen

The new Power Rangers film will feature the first openly gay superhero in big screen history.

Yellow Ranger Trini, played by actress Becky G, is revealed to be experiencing ‘girlfriend problems’ during one scene in the forthcoming movie.

Director Dean Israelite says that the moment is small but ‘pivitol’ to the film as the character questions her sexual orientation.

“For Trini, really she's questioning a lot about who she is,” he told the Hollywood Reporter.

“She hasn't fully figured it out yet. I think what's great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, 'That's OK.’

“The movie is saying, 'That's OK,' and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe.”

Many LGBT comic book superheroes have been portrayed as straight when they’ve been translated to the big screen.

Disney’s box office-topping live action remake of Beauty and The Beast recently faced controversy for featuring a gay character.

Josh Gad plays Le Fou in the big budget film, who is in love with Luke Evans’ Gaston, making him Disney’s first ever gay character.

The film will not be screening in Malaysia as Disney refused to censor out his scenes, while Russia has bumped the PG-rated film up to a 16+.
