US pop superstar Taylor Swift was crowned International Solo Artist while Coldplay picked up the Godlike Genius gong at this year’s NME Awards.

Swift was presented the award a day after scooping three gongs at the Grammy Awards.

The singer was unable to attend the ceremony at London’s O2 Academy Brixton but recorded a thank you message in which she deemed the design of the award “aggressive”.

Speaking about the bronze middle-finger shaped gong, she said: “I got the award in the mail. I gotta be honest with you, when you first open the box this feels a little aggressive. But then you get used to it, you it on the shelf. You’re like, I kinda like it, it’s kinda LOL.

“But I’m just saying at first impressions, it’s a little weird, but now I understand it, now it’s a strange compliment, you’re being cheeky about it.”

Coldplay were honoured with the Godlike Genius award by Kylie Minogue. Taking to the stage to perform at the event, frontman Chris Martin joked: “We haven't played a proper gig for ages. We did a warm up gig in Santa Clara last week for the NME Awards. This is supposed to be the last one but if you want, we're going to keep f*****g playing.”
