Jeremy Irons was so ‘relaxed’ on BBC Radio 2 he accidentally dropped the f-word live on air.

Irons, 67, was on Chris Evans’ Breakfast Show on Friday morning when he shocked listeners with the swear word.

The actor sent Evans into a panic when he inadvertently dropped the profanity while recalling a meeting with John Hurt.

"I remember when I was a young man, about 30 as an actor, and John Hurt – who was a neighbour of mine in Hampstead – we were having a coffee one morning," he said. "When you get to 30 you begin to get a bit edgy you see, because you find there’s young ones coming up who look rather better than you, because they’re younger, and are rather good as actors.

"John and I were moaning about this. And he said, ‘You know what I do when I find a good actor?’ I say to him, 'You have a wonderful voice. Have you ever listened to it?' And the actor is f******.’”

Clearly panicked Evans shouted: “Oh dude you can’t say that, you can’t say that on the BBC. I’ve got to apologise on your behalf - in fact can you apologise on your behalf.”

Irons replied: "It's so relaxed here, so normal. I’m most terribly sorry. If anybody’s offended I’m most terribly sorry.”

The apologetic actor continued: “I’m so embarrassed I can’t talk. I need to recover.”

Despite Evans chastising Paloma Faith for laughing, fans soon took to Twitter to make light of the slip-up with some deeming it "glorious".

But seeing Irons' name trending panicked some fans who thought he had died.
