Harry Styles comes close to drowning as he battles to survive in the Dunkirk trailer.

The former One Direction singer, 23, is nearly squashed by two ships as 400,000 British and Allied troops await evacuation from the French City.

The two minute clip – featuring music by composer Hans Zimmer – gives fans a longer look at Christopher Nolan’s retelling of the 1940 “colossal military disaster” which took place during World War Two.

The trailer features several heart-stopping moments, from soldiers cowering on the beaches, a torpedo hitting a ship and the RAF coming under attack from enemy fire.

Viewers are given a glimpse of Mark Rylance, who plays a civilian who sets sail for Dunkirk in a bid to help remove troops off the beaches of France and back to Britain. He is warned to “turn back” by a soldier (Cillian Murphy).

Rylance tells him: “There is no hiding from this son. We have a job to do.”

To which a terrified Murphy replies: “I’m not going back. If we go we all die. You’re weekend sailors – not the bloody Navy. You should be at home. Turn it around.”

The film boasts a stellar cast including Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy, James D’Arcy, Jack Lowden, Barry Keoghan and Tom Glynn-Carney.

Speaking about the film Nolan said: “Dunkirk and the legend of it is something that British people grow up with – it’s in our DNA.

“The idea of taking this paradoxical situation and putting it on the big screen – it’s something that’s been close to my heart for some time, it’s something I didn’t think I was ready to do.”
