Harry Styles fans are slightly confused about the singer’s role in the eagerly-awaited new Christopher Nolan film.

Following the release of the first Dunkirk trailer earlier this week, some One Direction supporters are taking to Twitter to try and work out what the film is actually about.

The 22-year-old’s sizable fanbase were predictably excited by their idol’s appearance alongside Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy in the first look at the film, but confusion soon set in.

“What is dunkirk about where's dunkirk lol,” wrote one puzzled fan.

“what is dunkirk even about and is harry's role important at all,” posted another.

One fan decided to directly message Styles to simply ask: “What is a Dunkirk?”

Some of his die hard followers were keen for the star to do a couple of songs during the harrowing WWII epic.

“Who else wants @Harry_Styles to sing in the #Dunkirk movie? I KNOW I DO! #HarryStyles,” one fan posted.

Another wrote: “Imagine harry would sing the soundtrack for #dunkirk #HarryStyles #dunkirk #DunkirkMovie #DunkirkTrailer.”

While the size of Styles’ role is unknown, he features in a number of scenes in a new trailer, including one where he appears to be drowning.

Speaking about his co-star, Oscar-winner Mark Rylance told the Standard that Styles was “shaping up” as an actor and likened him to Sean Penn.

Asked if he had given the singer any advice, he told the Standard: “No, he doesn’t need tips. He is shaping up.

"I didn’t know anything about him really other than my 12-year-old niece played me a music video. She adores him. There are girls all over the place trying to get to him — he is one handsome fella with an incredible smile and eyes.

“What’s really surprised me is he’s really witty, really funny — he really makes me laugh. He’s been ever so brave, not making any fuss.

“He seems remarkable ... one of those people [who has] — Sean Penn has it too — a kind of panache. I look at them and think, ‘How did you get that? How do you get so that life is easy?’ But he has got a lovely, lovely character. It’s a gift.”

Dunkirk is slated for release on July 21st 2017.
