The scene of the fire in Chatham, Kent, where a young mother and her baby son died
12 April 2012

Two men have been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with the murders of a woman and her baby in an arson attack at their home.

Danai Muhammadi, 23, is accused of murdering his estranged wife Melissa Crook and their 15-month-old son Noah in the blaze in Chatham, Kent, in the early hours of Saturday.

He appeared at Medway Magistrates' Court in a separate hearing to his co-defendant Farhad Mahmud, 35, of Kensington House, Maidstone.

Both men are also charged with three counts of attempted murder and will appear at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday.

The court heard the attempted murder charges relate to 20-year-old Mrs Crook's parents and brother.

Her father Mark Crook, 49, is in a life-threatening condition in East Grinstead Hospital while her brother Bohdan Crook, 21, has been released from Medway Maritime Hospital after treatment. Her mother, Amanda Crook, 49, has been discharged from hospital after being treated for smoke inhalation and burns.

Dressed in a navy T-shirt, Muhammadi, a car salesman from Britannia Street, Coventry, spoke through an interpreter to confirm his name and address and give his date of birth during the five-minute hearing.

Dressed in a grey T-shirt, bearded Mahmud spoke only to give his name, date of birth and address during his own brief hearing.

No applications for bail were made.

Police are continuing to question a 21-year-old woman from Coventry over the blaze, while a fourth person, a 37 year-old-man from Coventry, has been released on police bail while inquiries continue.
