Seven people were injured after the roof of a double-decker bus was torn off when it crashed into a bridge in south London.

Dramatic pictures showed the roof of the route 197 service to Peckham wedged against a railway bridge after it was sliced off in Norwood last night.

Debris was left strewn across the road after the crash.

The London Ambulance Service treated seven patients at the scene after being alerted to the incident at 9.10pm.

It is believed the seven people who were injured were all on the top deck of the bus.

Four people were taken to Croydon University Hospital including three patients who had minor injuries.

One woman had neck pain and was collared and boarded as "a precaution", the LAS said.

The LAS sent a hazardous area response team, two ambulance crews, two single responders in cars and a duty manager to the scene.

Lemra Styles wrote on Twitter: "I really want to know what went through the bus drivers head when he decided to drive the double decker bus under South Norwood bridge?"

Another person wrote on Twitter: "Just seen a bus with its top deck tipped off in South Norwood under Portland road bridge. Looks horrific. Hope no one was hurt."

A black and yellow sign next to the bridge reads: "Warning low bridge. Not suitable for double deck vehicles."

The A215 Portland Road at Manor Road near Norwood Junction station was closed after the incident, and London Overground services between Sydenham and West Croydon were also suspended.

Leon Daniels, Transport for London's managing director of surface transport, said: "At approximately 9.20pm on 18 July, a route 197 double-decker bus, operated by Arriva, was involved in a collision with a bridge at the junction of Portland Road and Clifford Road.

"Seven passengers sustained minor injuries and emergency services attended the scene. There will be a full investigation into the incident."

In a similar incident in February a double-decker's roof was ripped off when it hit a tree in Holborn, central London.
