Police smashed the windows of this car to save the life of a dog which was shut inside on the hottest day of the year so far.

Officers attended the scene in Finsbury Park, north London, where they found the animal inside the stationary vehicle, with no sign of the owner nearby.

The animal was cowering in the footwell on the driver's side in intense heat with no water.

Police were left with no choice but to smash the windows.

Sgt Richard Berns posted a picture of the car with its windows smashed on Twitter and wrote: "This dog was left in this car on the hottest day of the year with no water or ventilation. It has both now."

According to ITV, the car's owners returned to find it with the windows shattered.

Police said today the dog owner was given words of advice at the scene and a visit by police officers and the RSPCA was arranged.

The incident, on Friday, came on a day of sweltering heat in London with public health warnings in place.
