Despite stunning the country with his virtuoso playing on the way to winning this year’s Britain’s Got Talent, Tokio Myers said he still cannot afford his own piano - as he stunned commuters this morning with a performance on the Tube.

The 33-year-old multi-instrumentalist today unveiled a new campaign that will see three of the instruments installed at Tube stations across London to brighten up commuters’ journeys.

The three Yamaha pianos are free for anyone to use and will be moved around various Underground stations over the next two years as part of TfL’s #platform88 project – named after the number of keys on a standard piano.

Myers launched it this morning by performing three songs from his forthcoming debut album at Tottenham Court Road station.

He told the Standard: “We’re trying to cheer London up and get them ready for the rush hour.

“I think it’s great that a piano can be just left there because you could just go and play it yourself, or hear someone else play a bit of music, having a bit of fun.”

The musician, who was crowned champion of the ITV talent show in June, confessed: “It’s funny because I still don’t even have a piano in my own flat.

"The piano doesn’t have to be an expensive instrument to learn – you can get a starter keyboard from Argos for £30, that’s how I started.

Myers’ debut album Our Generation is due to be released tomorrow

“Then usually your school will have an upright one to play on once you get going, then you’ll probably know someone who has one you can practise on.

“Before you know it you might be in the position where you feel like you might be able to afford one, but I’m still not there and I still l don’t have one!

"I still use keyboards. That’s another story though… It’s one of those things.”

Myers’ debut album Our Generation is due to be released tomorrow, while his UK tour comes to London in April.
