A woman was allegedly raped as she walked home alone through Wimbledon in the early hours of this morning, police have said.

Scotland Yard said officers were called by the stricken victim, 34, at about 2am.

She told police she had been raped in Dundonald Recreation Ground - a five hectare green space with tennis courts, a bowling green and a playground - by an unknown man some 30 minutes earlier.

On Sunday the force launched an appeal for information. A spokesman said the woman, who has been taken to a Haven Sexual Assault Referral Centre, had been walking home from Wimbledon when the attack happened.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police's Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command are investigating.

Contact officers on 020 8721 4106 or via 101 with any information.
