A woman courageously fought off a would-be rapist by smashing a glass over his head, police said.

The man had allegedly pinned the 28-year-old woman down and taken off her clothes when she managed to grab a glass and strike him, before screaming for help.

The man then fled the scene in Newington Causeway, off the Elephant and Castle roundabout.

Police said he attempted to rape her after the pair had met earlier that day. The incident happened on Monday, April 20, at about 3am.

Detectives have today released a photo of a homeless man they would like to speak to following the sex attack.

Iulian Tirda, a 33-year-old Romanian national, was last known to be sleeping rough in central London.

Anyone who has seen Iulian Tirda or knows where he is should not approach him and contact police immediately on 999. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
