Doctor Who actor Peter Capaldi has revealed that he would not want a male companion on the BBC show.

Capaldi, 57, who is enjoying his second outing as the Doctor, said he is scared a male accomplice would get more “action”.

Speaking to Radio Times he said: "With the best will in the world, I don't want a bloke, because I'm frightened that they'll give him all the action and I'll be standing around spouting scientific gobbledygook... 'Oh, Peter's not up to chasing those Zygons down the corridor, let the chap do it.' And that would be awful. I want to chase the Zygons!"

Capaldi was accompanied by Jenna Coleman's Clara Oswald, but she bowed out of the show during the series nine finale on Saturday night.

Capaldi said he was sad to see Coleman leave, telling the publication: "I found it really sad, because Jen's a great girl and a great actress. I used to love being in the Tardis with her, we'd just have a laugh, you know?

"And that's all I want out of work, I'm afraid, to go along and have a nice time. While playing the most iconic character in the history of British television."

Fans are keen to learn who will succeed Coleman, with Steven Moffat teasing another actress.

"I'm beginning to have an idea of the kind of person, specific ideas but not a specific actress. We're definitely looking for a different dynamic," he told Radio Times.

If an actor were to take on the role it wouldn’t be the first time a male companion has accompanied the time travelling extraordinaire.

Danny Pink, Rory Williams and Mickey Smith have all joined the Doctor in his blue tardis.

Capaldi will return to screens for the Christmas special where fans will see the twelfth Doctor meet his 'wife' River Song (Alex Kingston).

Doctor Who returns to BBC One for a Christmas special at 5:15pm on December 25.
