Zokora escapes action on penalty dive

14 April 2012

Didier Zokora will escape punishment following the Tottenham midfielder's dive against Portsmouth on Sunday after the FA claimed it is not within their power to act.

The FA are restricted by Fifa regulations and are unwilling to break ranks, despite previously announcing a desire to rid the game of cheating.

The Ivory Coast midfielder threw himself to the ground to win a penalty from referee Chris Foy — converted by Jermain Defoe — in the season's most high-profile case of simulation.

The FA's refusal to act demonstrates their weakness and unwillingness to confront players who have clearly cheated match officials.

An FA source told Sportsmail: We've been restricted by Fifa in the past on where we can take retrospective disciplinary action and that has been frustrating for us at times.'

Soho Square's response shows that the incident will intensify political pressure for future offenders to be charged.

Fifa have slapped down the FA in the past for upgrading and downgrading cards, arguing a game cannot be refereed twice.
