John McEnroe was back on his favourite court in New York last night after answering a challenge to play Novak Djokovic.

Dressed in a shirt and jeans, the 50-year-old came down from his position in the commentary box after the Serb had beaten Radek Stepanek in straight sets to reach the US Open fourth round.

Following a series of shots by McEnroe — which left his shirt hanging out of his trousers — the former world No1 delivered a trade mark serve-and-volley point before the pair embraced at the net.
