Yorkshire clinch county title

13 April 2012

Yorkshire today clinched their first county championship for 33 years.

They did so by wrapping up the maximum-points victory they needed against Division One strugglers Glamorgan with more than two sessions of the final day to spare at Scarborough.

Hundreds from Craig White (183), Matthew Wood (124) and David Byas (104) and the bowling of young off-spinner Richard Dawson and pace bowler Steve Kirby set up an innings-and-112-run win over the Welshmen which was completed when the final four wickets were taken this morning.

It all meant Yorkshire were over the finishing line without need for their final two matches of the summer, against Surrey at The Oval and Essex back at Scarborough next month.

The decisive victory was all the sweeter for captain Byas, because it was achieved on his home ground and the one where he learned his early cricket in the Yorkshire League.
