Wright-Phillips returns to boost England

12 April 2012

Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips has given England a boost ahead of their friendly international in Austria on Friday by training with his team-mates before the team flew out to Vienna.

Wright-Phillips had been forced to miss Wednesday's session with a slight ankle problem but he came through unscathed when put through his paces at London Colney by under-pressure head coach Steve McClaren.

It meant the 24 players at McClaren's disposal were all able to make the trip for a match designed as a warm-up for next Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier with Croatia at Wembley.

It is understood Scott Carson will make his first start for his country in place of Paul Robinson.

The Liverpool keeper, on loan at Aston Villa this season, has impressed with a series of fine displays for Martin O'Neill's side.

But his Villa team-mate Gareth Barry looks set to miss out against the Austrians with McClaren likely to revert to the Steven Gerrard-Frank Lampard combination in central midfield.

Barry has impressed during the Euro 2008 qualifiers held in Estonia and Russia but now Chelsea star Lampard seems poised for a recall.
