World No1 Jason Day announced today he will not play again until next year due to his back problem.

Day had been scheduled to compete in his home tournament, the Australian Open, at the Royal Sydney Golf Club from November 17-21 and then partner Adam Scott in the World Cup of Golf in Melbourne the following week.

Day and Scott won the last World Cup event in 2013, which was also held in Melbourne, with Day clinching the individual title, but the 28-year-old has been told to rest completely until next season after tearing a ligament in his back.

Day’s injury forced him out of the season-ending Tour Championship during the second round in Atlanta last month. He also withdrew during the final round of the BMW Championship in his previous event.

Meanwhile, Ryder Cup star Brandt Snedeker matched the course record at Natadola Bay to move into second place in the Fiji International.

The world No23 fired a seven-under-par 65 to finish the second round one shot behind Australia’s Matthew Giles.

Snedeker won three points out of three at Hazeltine last week to help the United States beat Europe.
