Wolves complete Hodgson move

Warrington have confirmed the capture of reigning Man of Steel Brett Hodgson on a two-year deal from next season.

The 32-year-old Australian, whose initial two-year contract with Huddersfield runs out in October, rejected the Giants' offer of a 12-month extension and will instead link up with his old Parramatta coach Tony Smith at the Wolves from November.

"I'm excited about the signing and surprised to get a chance for someone of his calibre to join us," said Smith. "Having coached Brett many many years ago at Parramatta, I know his capabilities and his knowledge and how he is able to pass that on to young people."

He added: "I look forward to working with and learning off Brett as well."

Hodgson, who is currently sidelined with a thigh strain, has scored 260 points in 29 appearances for the Giants since joining them from Wests Tigers 18 months ago.

A former NRL Premiership winner with the Tigers, Hodgson made six State of Origin appearances for New South Wales and last year became only the fourth Australian to win the Man of Steel award after a remarkable debut season in Super League.

"I would have loved to have stayed if at all possible but things just didn't work out how I would have wished," said Hodgson, who led the Giants to their first Wembley Challenge Cup final since 1962.

Hodgson, who was also named the Rugby League Writers Association Player of the Year in 2009, is expected to replace winger Chris Hicks on Warrington's overseas quota next season.

The move also raises a question mark over the future of former Leeds and Wigan full-back Richard Mathers.
