Win's not enough for Benitez

Marseille 1
Liverpool 2

Rafael Benitez is certainly a hard man to please.

Steven Gerrard turned this tie around with two goals in six minutes to get Liverpool off to a winning start in Group D of the Champions League.

And although the midfielder's first strike - a stunning looping effort from the edge of the box - was praised by Benitez, the Reds manager made it clear he expects even more from his captain. "Gerrard's first goal was fantastic," said Benitez. "The team played well and he played well but the team can play better and so can he. The positive is that there is room for improvement."

However, Marseille coach Erik Gerets thinks Gerrard is already a great of the game.

"He proved he's a world-class player," said Gerets. "Only players of that quality can score goals like that. He changed the course of the match."

The home side took the lead in the 23rd minute when Benoit Cheyrou's pass sent Lorik Cana clear to slot past Pepe Reina.

But the French fans were silenced by Gerrard, who scored the winner with his 99th goal for the club - a twice-taken penalty after Ryan Babel was brought down.

Benitez added: "Marseille came at us in the second half but we showed we have mental toughness. We are now in a very strong position in our group.

"We are at home to PSV next and, as long as we win our home matches, we will qualify."
