Windies suffer humiliating defeat

12 April 2012

India did World Cup hosts West Indies no favours when they crushed them by nine wickets in a low-scoring warm-up match at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium.

India's seam bowlers seized upon a helpful pitch offering generous bounce and movement to dismiss the hosts for a paltry 85 in 25.5 overs.

Munaf Patel was the leading bowler with four wickets for 10 runs from six overs, with Irfan Pathan collecting three for 25 in six overs.

Dinesh Karthik and Robin Uthappa then ensured India's innings did not take the same pattern as their opponents.

They added an unbroken 80 for the second wicket to lead their side home, following the early loss of Virender Sehwag.

Sehwag, whose place in the Indian side is under question, was caught behind off Daren Powell for a duck in the second over.

It was the only success for the Caribbean side, who have visions of becoming the first host nation to win a World Cup - but this performance hardly inspires confidence.

Only three West Indies batsmen got into double figures after the hosts chose to bat.

Captain Brian Lara made 22 - the top score - while vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan and all-rounder Dwayne Smith both got 13.
