Windies fight back against Australia

13 April 2012

Australia will be forced to work for their 15th successive Test victory, and a series whitewash, after the West Indies fought back on the fourth day of the Fifth Test in Sydney today.

The tourists took an unlikely 172-run lead as legspinner Mahendra Nagamootoo made the West Indies top score of 68.

Then, in the 10 overs left to play, Colin Stuart and Courtney Walsh won lbw decisions against Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer to reduce the hosts to 44 for two at stumps, still needing 129 to win.

The West Indies resumed today at 98 for one but lost three wickets with the total at 112.

A complete collapse looked likely but they recovered to reach 352 all out as Ramnaresh Sarwan scored a maiden Test half century, wicketkeeper Ridley Jacobs continued his good form with 62 and Nagamootoo also claimed his first Test half-century.

When No 11 Courtney Walsh came to the crease for his last innings in Australia he was accorded a guard of honour by the Australian players as he strode to the wicket.
