Williamson targets Zhang

14 April 2012

Alison Williamson, Britain's top archer, is up against China's Zhang Juanjuan in the last 16 of the women's archery competition today.

The 32-year-old from Melton Mowbray booked her place in today's medal rounds after beating Sayoko Kawauchi of Japan 154-150 yesterday.

World No3 Williamson, competing at her fourth Olympics, battled through swirling winds in the historic Panathinaiko Stadium to set up her meeting with No5 seed Juanjuan, which she knows will be a tough examination.

Barry Eley, her coach, said: "It was a good win yesterday because they were evenly matched.

"The Chinese are a bit of an unknown as we rarely see them until we come to the Olympics. The sort of scores that the Chinese girl has been doing are around the same as Alison so it should be a good match."

Williamson's Btitish team-mate Naomi Folkard is also competing in the last 16 today but faces an even more difficult task against No1 seed and gold medal favourite Park Sung Hyun.

Folkard, a music student from Leamington Spa, beat Finland's Mari Piuva by 156 points to 151 yesterday.
