Wigan sign African ace

Julius Aghahowa has completed his transfer to Wigan after being granted a work permit following a hearing in Sheffield.

The Nigeria striker, 24, joins the relegation-threatened Latics in a £2.1million deal from Ukraine side Shakhtar Donetsk.

Aghahowa, who has scored 14 goals in 32 games for Nigeria, becomes manager Paul Jewell's second striker signing following last week's £500,000 move for Caleb Folan from Chesterfield.

After a frustrating transfer window to date, Jewell is delighted to land a player he feels will prove himself in the Premiership.

"He's a striker of real pedigree who will add huge competition to the attacking positions," said Jewell, who also has Emile Heskey and Henri Camara on his books.

"We've really done our homework on this one, while I've watched him personally on two occasions.

"He's quick, strong, aggressive, good with both feet and I'm sure he will adapt to the rigours of the Premiership."

Aghahowa, who also found the net 32 times in 85 games for Shakhtar and has played in the Champions League, is renowned for his acrobatic goalscoring celebrations.
