Why Cardiff hull was holed

13 April 2012

THE principal feature of Hull's 2-1 victory at Emirates Stadium last September was manager Phil Brown's bold approach of leaving two players in attack at all times.

It is a high-risk strategy against a side who retain possession as well as Arsenal, but the merits are that your defenders always have more than one outlet ball.

Cardiff started with Jay Bothroyd and Ross McCormack up front but, whereas Hull defended higher up the pitch to compress the space and had a midfield link-man in Geovanni, the Bluebirds retreated.

That meant full-backs Bacary Sagna and Kieran Gibbs could push on and explains why the latter was in an advanced position to cross for Eduardo's opener.

Dave Jones' side allowed Arsenal to find their rhythm and were dancing to that tune all night.
