Well, following some sessions with golfing guru Dave Stockton to work on a much freer putting stroke, the world No2 reaped an instant reward at the Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio.

Westwood carded a three-under-par 67 to sit five shots behind first-round leader, Australian Adam Scott.

"I played well and rolled it nicely on the greens as well, so I'm pleased with everything," said the Briton at the Firestone Country Club. "A 67 is never anything to complain about around this course, even when there's not much wind and it's playing soft. It has its trickeries out there."

Tiger Woods, in his first appearance after a 12-week lay-off with Achilles and knee problems, was one shot behind Westwood. "I've got the competitive feel now," said the former world No1. "I have my power back."

Open champion Darren Clarke slumped to joint last place in the 76-man field with a seven-over-par 77.
