Wenger wary of scoring obsession

12 April 2012

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes his side must not become obsessive about making the most of their chances in front of goal.

The Gunners suffered a frustrating 90 minutes in midweek, when they dominated their Champions League clash against CSKA Moscow - but could just not put the ball into the net.

Wenger said: "We scored four at Reading when we took our first chance two weeks ago, so it is not like this team cannot score goals. They can score goals from everywhere. You have to be a bit relaxed about it. If you make an obsession of you it makes it worse."

Captain Thierry Henry, Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie and Tomas Rosicky in particular should all have done better on Wednesday when attempting to finish off the flowing moves of the home side.

Wenger, though, is convinced the goals will soon start to rack up again as he prepares his team for the trip to West Ham on Sunday.

"The feeling among the players is frustration," Wenger added.

"They feel they have a lot of quality and at the moment they do not get the complete reward for what they produce - and they are right."

Wenger continued: "I am convinced that you have to be very competitive, but also very composed.

"On Wednesday night, we lacked a bit of composure in front of goal and that problem increased because it became bigger and bigger every time we missed a chance, the next guy thinks 'if I have one, I really have to put it in'.

"Then you build the basis in you head to miss the next one. If we have been 2-0 up then I am sure that the next one would have gone in."
