Wenger 'might fancy' England - Butcher

12 April 2012

Former England captain Terry Butcher has tipped Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to take over from Steve McClaren as England manager before Euro 2008.

Butcher was asked if he believed McClaren, under pressure after dropped points against Macedonia and Croatia, would remain in the job.

And the Sydney FC manager told Radio Five Live: "Not in two years - I think there's a certain Mr Wenger who might fancy a crack at it."

Butcher believes the Football Association made a mistake in not appointing Martin O'Neill as England manager.

The former Rangers skipper had first-hand experience of O'Neill's talents when the Northern Irishman was at Celtic and he was in charge of Motherwell.

And he has been impressed by O'Neill's achievements at Aston Villa, who have risen to sixth in the Premiership under his control.

"I don't think there were many other candidates that hit you," Butcher added.

"With Sam Allardyce and Alan Curbishley, the fans would still be having their doubts.

"But you only have to look at Martin O'Neill at Aston Villa and you wonder if they made the right choice. I said that at the time and I wonder if they missed out there."
