Warriors crush Wildcats

Wigan cemented top spot in the Engage Super League after easing to a 48-6 victory over lowly Wakefield.

Gareth Hock marked his first start since returning from a two-year suspension with his first Super League hat-trick as the defending champions romped to a sixth straight win.

But the Warriors forward was perhaps outshone by a fine all-round performance by England full-back Sam Tomkins, who scored two of Wigan's eight tries, all of which were converted by Pat Richards. Josh Veivers converted a 16th minute Josh Griffin try for Wakefield's only contribution to the scoring.

Jamie Foster defeated Catalan Dragons virtually single-handedly with a 28-point haul to help St Helens reach third place in the standings with a 40-18 victory in a Stobart Stadium classic.

The prolific Foster, who turns 21 later this month, grabbed three tries and kicked eight goals from as many attempts to bring up 300 points for the season as Saints inflicted on the Dragons only their third defeat in their last 15 matches.

The French side would have gone third themselves with victory and they pushed their hosts all the way with another impressive performance, with Saints only clinching victory with late tries from centres Michael Shenton and Francis Meli.

The Catalans were dealt a blow with the loss of Scott Dureau and have now been defeated in all three matches in the absence of the influential Australian playmaker, but it was the lack of his goalkicking that proved costly. Remy Marginet, plucked from French domestic rugby, proved an able deputy at scrum-half but managed to land just one of his four kicks.

Leeds ended a three-match losing streak to reignite their play-off bid with a 20-0 victory over Hull and ease the pressure on coach Brian McDermott.

The Rhinos have faltered badly in recent weeks but Ryan Hall underlined his predatory instincts with a clinical score in the 13th minute after collecting a delightful pass from Kevin Sinfield.

Tries from rookie full-back Ben Jones-Bishop and Danny McGuire in the final quarter of the match sealed the points.
