Wanchope put on transfer list

13 April 2012

Former West Ham United striker Paulo Wanchope has been placed on the transfer list by Manchester City just six months after he moved to Maine Road.

The Costa Rican striker, who moved to Manchester City in a £3.6 million deal, was angry at being substituted in the 1-0 FA Cup win over Coventry on Saturday and clashed with manager Joe Royle as he made his way down the tunnel.

A meeting between the pair this morning failed to resolve their differences, and Wanchope has now been told he can leave struggling City.

"Joe Royle met with the player this morning and feels it is in the best interests of the club that they part company," said chief operating officer Chris Bird.

Wanchope and former world footballer-of-the-year George Weah were meant to be a dream partnership in City's first season back in the top flight.

But Weah departed after making just seven starts in the team and voiced his frustration at spending most of his time on the bench.

Now Wanchope is on his way out after scoring nine goals in 24 games following his move from Upton Park.

Brought into British football by Derby manager Jim Smith, he marked his debut with a wonder goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

No one has questioned his ability, but his inconsistency and regular World Cup call-ups by Costa Rica have infuriated a succession of managers.
