Aston Villa are holding out for £14million from Liverpool for midfielder Gareth Barry and want the majority of the fee up front.

Villa's captain has told the club he wants to go to Anfield but, as revealed in Sportsmail last week, Liverpool need Xabi Alonso's move to Juventus to go through before they can match the asking price and finance other deals including Albert Riera
from Espanyol.

A Villa statement read: 'Liverpool's bid for the player has been rejected.'

Villa remain interested in Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell as a possible replacement.
