New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori will find out later this week whether his World Cup campaign has been ended by injury.

The Black Caps' influential leader suffered a knee injury while fielding during Tuesday's 110-run win over Pakistan in Pallekele.

Vettori landed heavily on his right knee attempting a catch and was forced to leave the field soon after with the aid of two support staff.

A New Zealand spokesman revealed the extent of the damage will not be known until the team's arrival in Mumbai ahead of their penultimate group game against Canada on Sunday.

Following Vettori's injury Ross Taylor skippered the Black Caps to their victory, which sent them top of Group A and on the cusp of a quarter-final place.

The 27-year-old hit an unbeaten 131 before being handed the captaincy reins in Pakistan's faltering response, when they were bowled out for 192 chasing the Kiwis' 302 for seven.

Taylor admitted, however, the success had come at a cost as his side were now left to sweat on the fitness of Vettori.

"We'll just have to wait and see," Taylor said.

"Obviously he's a key part of our team and we need him to go further in this competition. But he didn't bowl a ball and we won, so we just have to give it a couple of days and see where he's at.

"Hopefully he's all right come two or three days' time."
