Venus happy to get behind Serena

13 April 2012

Eighth seed Venus Williams made 44 unforced errors but still defeated Camille Pin, of France, 7-5, 6-4. The American now plays No31 seed Sania Mirza, of India.

Williams, whose backside was the subject of lengthy television commentary during her previous match, is not upset by the attention on her body rather than her tennis skills, although questions about a reported problem with anaemia were brushed aside.

Strong strokes: Venus Williams

She said: "I don't talk about that very much and I try to let it be the past. I hope to God it's not a problem in the future. I think Serena is the Williams sister that is famous for her derriere! So I guess I'm getting a one-up on her, maybe."

Venus showed the other side of her nature during a doubles win with Serena as they overcame Australians Monique Adamczak and Christina Wheeler 7-5, 6-1.

When the umpire failed to overrule a call in their favour, the sisters let fly with heated words, led by Venus.

It continued at the change of ends, with Venus berating the umpire, ending with: "I am not a fool."

Victorious: Venus Williams

Russian second seed Svetlana Kuznetsova was too good for Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova, winning 7-6, 6-2, and there were also comfortable victories for fellow seeds Anna Chakvetadze, Daniela Hantuchova and Nadia Petrova.
