United report Chelsea

Manchester United today made an official complaint to the Premier League over Peter Kenyon's departure to rivals Chelsea.

This dramatic course of action follows yesterday's revelation by Standard Sport that the Old Trafford club were considering reporting Chelsea for poaching their former chief executive.

United wrote to the Premier League today outlining their complaint, which is set to be raised at a Premier League Board meeting tomorrow. The precise nature of the letter is, as yet, unclear. It may be a straightforward complaint over poaching, centre on a breach of gardening leave conditions, or possibly both.

Kenyon has been on gardening leave at Old Trafford since he quit last month. United had appeared willing to release Kenyon after the January transfer window but they are now threatening to make him serve the 12-month notice period in his contract.

The club's attitude has toughened after public comments by Real Madrid sporting director Jorge Valdano claimed Kenyon called him to register Chelsea's interest in Michel Salgado.
