United monitor Leeds pair

Manchester United could make a shock move for either Mark Viduka or Alan Smith of Leeds in the January transfer window.

There seems little doubt that Sir Alex Ferguson is looking to strengthen the United forward line and Leeds' financial plight would leave them with little option but to accept good offers for either player.

It is expected later today that the club will announce a short-term rescue package that will stave off administration until next month.

This could also result in the resignation of deputy chairman Allan Leighton.
