'Underdog' has golden touch

13 April 2012

Britain's Richard Whitehead and Hannah Cockroft both claimed landmark golds at the IPC Athletics World Championships today.

Whitehead set a championship record, which was also a personal best, as he took gold in the T42 200m in 25.88sec.

The victory in Christchurch, New Zealand was particularly sweet as he beat world No1, France's Clavel Kayitare, by 0.66sec. Whitehead said: "I was the underdog in the race and that's how I like it."

Cockroft followed Saturday's triumph in the T34 200m by winning the shorter sprint in a championship record 18.98sec.

"I've continued to work hard on my start which is the weakest part of my race but I've got the quickest top-end speed," she said. "I thought they'd be more on my tail."
