Trott: Tiredness not an excuse

England refuse to cite their gruelling winter schedule as mitigation for the stuttering start they have made to the World Cup.

Many of the same personnel who brought the Ashes home from Australia this winter are central to England's hopes of winning the global competition for the first time. But as England, who suffered a shock defeat to Ireland on Wednesday, come to the end of four months of non-stop touring, Trott insists tiredness is not an excuse.

"I think we have got to remember it is a World Cup - and you might only come to one World Cup," he said. "It is very dangerous to think about how much cricket we have played in the last couple of months."

He added: "I think the breaks in between games were enough for people to be able to recover and to perform.

"It is up to each individual and us collectively to gear ourselves up and feed off the energy of your team-mates and the atmosphere of the competition, which is really good."

Trott himself is faring well, having added 92 against Ireland to a half-century against Holland in the opening match.

He has also joined his team-mate Kevin Pietersen and West Indies great Viv Richards for a share of the record as the quickest batsman to reach 1,000 one-day international runs.

But the England number three is hungry for more ahead of Sunday's game against Group B table-toppers South Africa to face in Chennai

"It is an honour to be among those guys," he said.

"But it is important you don't stand still and you look forward to the next 1,000. Records are nice, but generally I don't play the game for records."
