World No3 Justin Thomas has led golf’s well wishers after Tiger Woods underwent surgery overnight following a car crash in Los Angeles.

Woods was said to be “awake, responsive and recovering” after the lengthy operation on his right leg and ankle.

Pictures have emerged of the crumpled vehicle Woods was driving, which flipped over a curb, hit a tree and rolled multiple times before coming to rest. The 15-time Grand Slam had to be pulled out of the wreckage via the windscreen by the emergency services.

Thomas, a close friend of Woods, said he was “sick to my stomach right now”. He added: “Praying for Tiger Woods and hoping for an amazing recovery. Thinking about his entire family and team, as all of us our sending our best wishes. We know TW is a fighter. Get well soon.”

Meanwhile, former US Open champion Justin Rose said: “Just seen the awful news. We know how tough you are, we’ve seen it a hundred times. Hoping and praying you’re ok my friend.”

In addition, Bryson Dechambeau, the winner of last year’s US Open, said he was “heartbroken and shocked” following news of the accident while Jack Nicklaus said he was “deeply concerned”.

The 18-time Grand Slam winner said: “We want to offer him our heartfelt support and prayers at this difficult time. Please join us in wishing Tiger a successful surgery and all the best for a full recovery.”

Sports stars from outside the world of golf also paid tribute to Woods during his convalescing in a Los Angeles hospital.

Former heavyweight boxing world champion Mike Tyson said: “Fight Tiger Woods like the champion you are for your kids and the world.”

Barbara and I just heard about Tiger’s accident, and like everyone else, we are deeply concerned. We want to offer him our heartfelt support and prayers at this difficult time. Please join us in wishing Tiger a successful surgery and all the best for a full recovery.

Meanwhile, NBA star Steph Curry said: “Thankfully, he didn’t have any life-threatening injuries but it’s just unfortunate and sad knowing all he’s been through these last couple of years. He’s ok from what I hear…you just wish for a speedy recovery.”
