Tigana seeks another foursome

13 April 2012

Fulham manager Jean Tigana revealed last night he hopes to sign four more players after completing the £7m transfer of Juventus goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar. Tigana believes that in Van der Sar he has the kind of player who will help attract more big names to Craven Cottage.

The Dutch international is regarded as one of the best the keepers in Europe and has a wealth of experience which will be vital to Fulham if they are to prosper in the Premiership.

"I have taken only one week's holiday during the summer because I was finding it extremely difficult to bring new players into the club," said Tigana, who missed out on Jan Koller and John Arne Riise before his spending spree.

"The market is very different now and players come at a very high price. But I continued to work hard and the signing of Edwin is a very big plus for me. I needed a player with more experience and one that has played at the highest level.

"It is very important to have a top keeper. I had Fabien Barthez when I was coach at Monaco. When we play the top teams next season we need to have players who have been there.

"I will try hard to sign four new faces next week which will consist of a defender, midfielder and another striker. I still have a good vision for this football club."

Van der Sar claimed he was being chased by a number of clubs across Europe but admitted the influence of Tigana made it to difficult for him to turn down a move to Craven Cottage.

Van der Sar said: "Jean Tigana was a big influence for me coming to Fulham. I called some people to ask about the coach and they all said good things about him.

"He was very successful at Monaco producing players like Emmanuel Petit and other big-name stars who are now playing across Europe. I was looking for the best team which fitted my qualities. But I had the best feeling about Fulham and knew they really wanted me.

"Jean told me the kind of game he wants to play and it suits my kind of goalkeeping."
