Three of the best games of Euro 2008 - two involve the unfancied Turks

13 April 2012

Three absolutely enthralling encounters.

1. Czech Republic v Turkey

One of the most amazing fightbacks in European football history.

The Czechs were cruising towards the quarter-finals with a 2-0 lead before Turkey hit back amid a red card for Demirel Volkan and a red face for Petr Cech.

Cue the immortal line: It’s never over until Fatih’s laddies scores...

2. Holland v Russia

An epic quarter-final occasion in Basle that featured wonderful goalkeeping the woodwork and controversy as Lubos Michel rescinded a red card.

Not forgetting a dramatic late equaliser from van Nistelrooy and then a terrific extra-time double that gave Russia a deserved victory ... and put about 10 million Euros on Andrei Arshavin’s asking price.

Germany's Torsten Frings (L) helps Turkey's Mevlut Erdinc (2nd R) to get up from the pitch after his side's defeat

3. Germany v Turkey

Probably the best semi-final in a major tournament since the 1980s. Turkey were ahead, Germany were ahead, Turkey were level.

Extra-time loomed, and nobody would have complained — even with Alan Green doing TV commentary amid picture problems.

Then came Lahm’s winner and Terim’s Turkey were forced to swallow a bitter pill — they’d been out-Turked.
